It has ham and bacon, and so much cheese. I wish I could take a bite of it right now! (Take a look at it and you’ll agree). I wish I could have a piece right now!

I’m based in Chicago, and to call the weather unpredictable would be an understatement. Sometimes when I’m caught in the rain without my umbrella, I turn to the kitchen cupboard in search of comfort. While I’m waiting patiently on sunny weather to arrive, I’ll stick to baking up some seriously delicious and easy deserts in the comfort of my apartment. Copycat Cracker Barrel Banana Pudding
This easy dessert recipe couldn’t be simpler. Mixing bananas, vanilla wafers and pudding together somehow creates a magical treat with great texture and flavor. While this dish is super simple to make at home, I’ve been known to pick up a few cartons from time to time at Magnolia Bakery in Chicago. It’s simply divine.

Copycat Cheesecake Factory Key Lime Pie
Hands down, key lime is my favorite flavor of pie. It’s light, tropical and with a rich dessert like cheesecake, I prefer a less heavy flavor than chocolate. Making key lime pie at home is a piece of cake (funny, I know). The main ingredients include lime juice, eggs and cream cheese. It’s up to you whether you want to make your own pie crust or use one from the grocery store.

Better than McDonald’s Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothie
Yes, a smoothie can be dessert! And what’s easier than throwing healthy ingredients into a blender? Not much. This sweet recipe is one of my favorites. What’s great about smoothie recipes is that you can mix and match any ingredients according to your preferences and the recipe will turn out just great. Don’t take my word for it, make yourself a homemade smoothie sometime soon!

10 Quick Tips to Detox: Mentally and Physically

1. Eat mostly plants (as Michael Pollan would say) and try going vegetarian for the day or the week (or stick to smaller portions of lean meat)
2. Eat organic foods (non-GMO, pesticide-free)
3. Try my 7 Day Plan for Clean Eating
4. Avoid packaged food products (which often contain toxic substances like artificial colors and preservatives)
5. Avoid secondhand smoke, and (while this is a longer term effort, that requires significant commitment) try to quit smoking
6. Drink plenty of water
7. Exercise! The best way to detox/get rid of toxins in your body is to sweat them out
8. Take deep breaths (inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds)
9. Try sitting still, in a quiet room, with your eyes closed for 3-5 minutes before you go to bed: this is a light form of meditation that can make it easier for you to let go of everything that happened during the day before you go to sleep (and try to get 7 hours of sleep at least every night!)
10. Drink this green smoothie recipe every morning as part of your breakfast: it will rejuvenate and energize you for the day. You can enjoy it for breakfast or with a green salad and some protein at lunch – make it a green meal!

Energizing Green Smoothie

Makes 3 servings; Each serving: 100 calories, 3.5g fat, 18g carbs, 4.6g fiber, 1.9g protein

Note: For added fiber and protein, you can throw some ground up flax seeds in there as well!

The Ingredients

• 4 leaves of kale (1-2 cups chopped)
• 1 small apple
• 1 small pear
• 1 Tbsp almond butter (all natural, nothing added)
• Unsweetened almond milk (4 oz)
• Water (enough to make the drink smooth)
• Ice – optional, for serving

The Directions: Put all of the ingredients in a blender – blend until smooth. Drink and enjoy.
