Sarah Skerrett is the long-distance member of the Mr. Food team. She works out of our office in suburban Chicago. She is a web editor for MrFood.com and brings you the weekly newsletter from Mr. Food six days a week! Originally from the western suburbs of Chicago, she studied creative writing at Eckerd College before working in book and magazine publishing. As a kid, there were two remarkable things about her: her bowl-cut and her insatiable appetite for plain pasta with butter. Eventually she grew out of the bowl-cut AND the drab palate! These days, her food tastes are more exotic and she is also more adventurous when it comes to attacking new and challenging recipes. As a devotee of Mr. Food’s “Quick & Easy†cooking philosophy, she will try any recipe so long as it’s not a four-hour commitment!
What are your 3 favorite ingredients to cook or bake with?
Rosemary, chili pepper, and garlic.
What would you eat for your last supper?
Hopefully, I’m given the option to extend my last supper into two meals because my two favorites are in a dead heat: steamed live Maine lobster with dirty mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus vs. Jack Daniels steak cooked medium-rare with a balsamic-drizzled fresh spinach salad.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Durian candy. Durian is a spiky fruit that is known for its pungent odor. Okay, full disclosure: I couldn’t get past the Durian stank to actually swallow the candy. So, this would be the weirdest thing I’ve tasted.
What’s your go-to snack food?
I can’t live without Snapea Crisps (a salty sun-dried pea snack). Because they’re green and have “pea” in the title, I assure myself they’re a healthy snack. They’re healthy the way Fritos are a good source of corn, but boy, are they delicious.
What’s in your fridge right now?
Leftover salmon, green grapes, spreadable goat cheese, asparagus, edamame hummus, Greek yogurt, olives, turkey breast, bleu cheese, a sea of condiments (ketchup, soy sauce, A-1, horseradish, etc.)
