This is a family tradition that we did growing up:
The night before we cut up/peeled enough fruits to almost fill a punchbowl. Then a half gallon of vanilla ice cream was sliced and laid across the top. Cover it all with clear plastic wrap. Put in refrigerator. Everything is ready in the morning. With nine of us and various church commitments, this was perfect to hold us through the presents and an early afternoonChristmas dinner
