Comfort Food Copycat Recipes, Southern Style

August 11, 2011 by RecipeChatter 1 Comment

When you hear the words “comfort food,” what do you think of? Many of us think winter, so you might be surprised to learn that apparently comfort food is popular any time of the year, not just when the snow is falling! On August 9, our friends at AllFreeCopycatRecipes sent out a newsletter with 29 Recipes for a Southern Potluck, and readers went bananas for these mouth-watering copycat recipes from restaurants inspired by the South. I know fried chicken is personally one of my favorite guilty pleasures, especially from Colonel Sanders himself. I think it’s the perfect thing to bring on picnics at the park; it’s easy to transport, easy to eat, and easy to clean up. Pair it with RecipeLion’s homemade 3-Step Coleslaw, and you’ve got yourself a perfect picnic! It’s nice to know I am not alone when it comes to loving deliciously greasy fried chicken; the Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe copycat proved the most popular recipe among readers of their newsletter, and we wanted to share it with you. Check it out below, along with some other tasty copycat recipes from restaurants you’re sure to recognize!

KFC Fried Chicken

KFC Fried Chicken Recipe: Have you always wondered how KFC gets their chicken so darn crispy? This recipe for a homemade version reveals all the secrets! The chicken is double-dipped in the coating to achieve the crispy yet tender fried chicken we all know and love so much.

Instructions:

  1. Marinate your chicken in KFC marinade, a few hours is ideal.
  2. Preheat your shortening to 350 degrees F.
  3. Mix together 1 beaten egg and 1 cup milk.
  4. Combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, baking soda, MSG, salt and pepper to make KFC’s dry flour mixture
  5. Dip the chicken in the egg/milk mixture, coat with flour, and repeat. Once all the chicken is well coated, you’re ready to get frying!

Please Note: Be sure to use tongs and be careful not to splash any hot oil on yourself. If you cook like me, oven mitts might also be a good idea; I tend to be a little messy in the kitchen!

If you’re feeling a bit guilty about indulging in all that fried chicken, try balancing things out with this delicious recipe for Cracker Barrel Copycat Country Green Beans. I love everything involving bacon, and green beans are no exception!

For breakfast, try this Copycat Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls Recipe. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not live it up? This recipe is so yummy, you’ll never want to skip breakfast again! I know I would love to begin my day with soft, fluffy cinnamon roll drizzled with cream cheese frosting!

If your mouth is watering just from reading these copycat recipes, they’ve got plenty more where they came from! Homemade Moon Pies, Bob Evans Cheddar Baked Potato Soup, and Applebee’s Baby Back Ribs, just to name a few!

If you’re feeling extra adventurous at attacking these copycat recipes, why not try your hand at making your own butter? They have a fabulous, easy-to-follow recipe that shows you How to Make Butter in Under 5 Minutes! Yes, this is a recipe for homemade butter! Surprisingly enough, it’s quite easy and very tasty.

Instructions:

  1. Combine heavy cream and salt; mix together in a stand mixer on high until it begins to look a bit like scrambled eggs.
  2. Fill your bowl with cold, running water. You’ll want to get rid of the buttermilk that is beginning to form; it looks like water separating from the butter.
  3. Shape the butter into a ball and continue to massage it  under cold water until the water runs clear.

Congratulations! You’ve now discovered how simple it is to make your own butter! Wrap it in parchment paper and stick it in the fridge to cool. If you’re impatient, grab a piece of bread and enjoy! In the morning, toast a slice of 3 Seed Bread and you’ll be in heaven.

If you’ve enjoyed these Southern-inspired restaurant recipes, be sure to sign up for AllFreeCopycatRecipe’s newsletter! You’ll get free copycat recipes e-mailed your inbox weekly. Eating out at restaurants can get pricey, so why not find a recipe for a homemade version? Once you’re signed up for the newsletter, you’ll have endless copy cat and restaurant recipes the whole family will love! Don’t miss out on learning these copycat recipes!
