Delicious Down-Home, Southern Style Casseroles

August 9, 2012 by RecipeChatter Leave a Comment

Summer is about getting back to your roots and rediscovering exactly what makes home so homey. Days are longer, college kids return home for summer, and many towns or cities have food festivals full of delicious comfort food that remind people of home. No matter where you’re from, though, there is one type of food that will always make you feel at home: Southern or country food. AllFreeCasseroleRecipes.com has quite a few Southern style casseroles that are sure to make you smile.

So what types of food am I referring to when I say “Southern style casseroles?” I’m talking about country chicken, BBQ chicken, chili, cornbread, and grits just to name a few. Southern recipes are relatively simple to make but have such robust and delicious flavors. They are pretty much guaranteed to satisfy your stomach and warm your heart.

Let’s start with a few chicken casserole recipes. Country Chicken Casserole is creamy and comforting. This recipe uses two kinds of soup to cover the chicken. It has a relatively simple, pot-pie like taste. BBQ Chicken and Cornbread Casserole, on the other hand, can have a little bit more of a tangy kick depending on your chosen BBQ sauce. Cornbread tops a mixture of chicken, corn, and sweet potatoes. It’s like this recipe just screams “comfort food.”

If that description made your mouth water but you don’t have a taste for chicken, then I’d suggest trying Comforting Slow Cooker Bean and Corn Casserole instead.

This recipe has more of a wholesome chili taste to it thanks to all of the vegetables. It’s entirely meatless for those of you who are vegans, vegetarians, or meat-haters out there. Another vegetable-heavy Southern style casserole is Ridiculously Easy Southern Succotash Stew. For those of you who don’t know what succotash is and have never Wikipedia-ed the Looney Tunes character Sylvester’s catchphrase “Sufferin’ succotash!”, succotash is a simple dish of corn and beans. Once you taste this vegetable casserole, you’ll find yourself mimicking Sylvester. I promise.

I also have two breakfast casserole recipes that you should try as well. The first is a Country Frittata. Again, the recipe calls for pretty simple ingredients like ham and cheese but the flavor is anything but ordinary. Hashbrown Egg Nests are also delicious Southern style casseroles. They combine a savory egg mixture with a crispy hash brown shell. Again, simple but loaded with flavor. Plus, they’re super easy to eat because all you need are your hands.

If you have to choose just one of the many Southern style casseroles in the world to try, make it the Hot Pineapple Casserole. This casserole is practically a Southern tradition. It works great as a dessert or as a side dish. I recommend serving it with a nice juicy ham. Words cannot even begin to explain how wonderful this dish is, but maybe a picture that’s worth 1000 words might be able to come close:
