Four Dogs in a Dash: Regional Hot Dog Toppings

May 21, 2015 by RecipeChatter Leave a Comment

Hot dogs are weirdly controversial, and it comes down to one reason. People take pride in their local dog’s style. Anywhere you go in the United States, people will tell you that their dog is the best, and they’ll be able to tell you exactly what goes on it. It’s bizarre when you think about it, because the toppings don’t change too dramatically. Most dogs have some mustard and some kind of seasoning, at least.

Four-Dogs-In-a-Dash

This summer, why not stray from your local dog’s typical toppings and try some hot dog toppings from somewhere else? I’ll refrain from ‘Who Will Be The Wiener?’ jokes, because for us, it’s not about who has the best dog. We’re all about appreciating the versatility of this fab American food, and we want you to try them all!

It’s amazingly quick and easy to try some other toppings on your hot dog. Just check out this video from RecipeLion’s Youtube Channel.

If you want to try any of these wonder dogs, here are the recipes!

East Coast Dog

EastCoastDog

This Reuben dog hot dog toppings recipe is really rockin’ the sauerkraut. The Thousand Island sauce is what really takes the flavor up a notch!

Serves up to 4 hot dogs
Prep time: 15 mins.

Ingredients

  • All-beef hot dogs
  • Buns
  • 1/4 cup Thousand Island dressing
  • 2 slice Swiss cheese (halved)
  • 2-4 pickle slices

For sauerkraut dressing:

  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped white onion
  • 1/2 cup sauerkraut
  • 2-3 sun-dried tomato halves
  • 1/4 tsp. caraway seeds
  • dash of kosher salt
  • dash of ground pepper
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine

Instructions

  1. To make sauerkraut dressing, combine 1 tbsp. canola oil, chopped white onion, and sauerkraut in a skillet on medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in tomatoes, salt, pepper and caraway seeds and heat for another 3 minutes. Add white wine, and keep on low heat 5 minutes.
  2. Cook hot dogs in 1 tbsp. canola oil until grill lines appear, flipping occasionally.
  3. Spread Thousand Island dressing on bun. Pile on Swiss cheese, hot dog, Saurkraut dressing, and pickle slice.
