Last weekend, I was hunting through 3 different grocery stores here in Ireland for applesauce. I wanted to use the applesauce in a healthy muffins recipe, so the applesauce was more of an ingredient than a stand-alone dish. No, they do not carry applesauce in Ireland. My boyfriend just shook his head at such a characteristically American convenience. He has a point. Why was I even looking to buy applesauce anyway when it’s so simple to make? Instead, I picked out some rather unattractive cooking apples and made plenty of applesauce to spare.
Applesauce is great for canning when a large number of apples are in season (fall). Nonetheless, you will spend less any time of year by purchasing fresh apples rather than packaged applesauce, and you can adjust the sweetness and spices to your liking.
Remember, you can replace the oil in baking recipes with an equal amount of applesauce, or try half oil, half applesauce. This is a great way to make baked goods a little bit healthier. Add cinnamon and a touch of agave nectar or honey to the applesauce to sweeten. Applesauce is also tasty with potato pancakes. Yum!
