This guest post comes to us from blogger Carrie Robinson. Carrie is the blogger behind Frugal Foodie Mama. Thanks, Carrie, for your great slow cooker stew recipe.

The Best Slow Cooker Beef Stew

Hello all!  I am Carrie, and you can find me over at Frugal Foodie Mama sharing my budget friendly and tasty recipes, blogging about my life as a stay at home mom to a teenager and a toddler, and how I manage to stay a foodie on a single-income budget.

I love breaking out my slow cooker often during the holidays and winter months.  There is nothing like coming home to a warm slow cooker filled with something delicious after a long day of holiday shopping or an afternoon of playing in the snow.

Today, I am sharing my recipe with you all for The Best Slow Cooker Beef Stew.  Beef stew is hearty, comforting, and warm — perfect for a chilly winter evening and the perfect, fuss-free dinner during the holidays.

 Beef Stew

For my The Best Slow Cooker Beef Stew, you will need:

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds of beef stew meat, cubed
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pound potatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces — I used French fingerlings, but you can use any variety.
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 8 ounces baby carrots, chopped in half
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • 2-1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup red wine (This is the secret ingredient that makes it THE BEST.  I used a Cabernet Sauvignon.)
  • 2 bay leaves

Instructions:

  1. Place the cubed stew meat in a large bowl.
  2. Add the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika to the meat and toss to coat well.
  3. Spray the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray.
  4. Add the celery, carrots, onion, and garlic to the slow cooker.
  5. Dump in the floured, seasoned meat.
  6. Then, pour in the broth, Worcestershire sauce, and wine.
  7. Give it a stir, and then drop in the 2 bay leaves.
  8. Cook on HIGH for 6 to 7 hours.
  9. Ladle into bowls and serve with warm, crusty bread.
Enjoy!

Beef stew is my favorite slow-cooker meal. All it needs is a salad and some biscuits on the side. I don’t usually follow a recipe, but my method and list of ingredients is similar to yours, except that I don’t generally include celery and I layer the veggies and put the meat on top, stirring it all together at the end.

I’d love to win the Hamilton Beach slow cooker so I could brown the beef right in the pot before slow cooking it. Great feature!

I like that this recipe does not require “browning” the meat before putting into crockpot … I hate that and to be honest always “refuse” to brown first – sometimes Im lucky to get everything in the pot before rushing out the door and they want me to brown the meat first??!

I really like the addition of the Worcestershire sauce – I’ve not done that before and will try it soon.

Sounds will be a delicious and tasteful recipe and healthy too to enjoy with family and friends. I am also lover of beef and try it tomorrow for dinner according to your cooking method.

We just make a standard beef stew with beef, carrots, potatoes and onions; a few flavorings like garlic of course and pepper and salt but it is good. Never made one in a slow cooker since ours is really kinda tiny.

My husband is allergic to beef so I have gotten really good and substituting chicken, turkey, or pork in place of beef. It’s time for stew after the ice storm we just had in Oklahoma!

I usually make beef stew from the leftovers of my slow-cooker pot roast which has onions, carrots, and potatoes. Then I add some green peas and corn. YUM!!!
