On May 21, 2014, the editors of FaveSouthernRecipes and TheBestDessertRecipes had the chance to attend the 2014 Sweets & Snacks Expo at McCormick Place in Chicago. The show was a snack-lover’s dream! We were able to spend the day wandering around the various exhibits, tasting all of the goodies and searching for free samples to take home. We wanted to see as much of the show as possible so that we could learn about all of the hot new trends and products about to hit the market.
Many companies were introducing new flavors and varieties of their best-selling products. Miniature, unwrapped versions of everyone’s favorite candies seemed to be just about everywhere. Hershey’s even went home with Best in Show Award from the Most Innovative New Product Awards for their new York Minis. Many exhibitors were also focused on natural sweets and snacks. We tasted plenty of gluten-free and non-GMO snack foods; we particularly enjoyed the Slim Chips from Gourmet Basics, which also took home an award from the Most Innovative New Product Awards.
The products at the Sweets & Snacks Expo offered attendees a good mix of both the old and the new. Many of the products seemed to indulge in a sense of nostalgia in the form of comforting and old-fashioned candies. Plenty of other products, however, were turned toward the future, whether that meant Sriracha-flavored snacks or snack foods made without gluten and GMOs.
